The Gulf of Poets and the Cinque Terre
The network of paths that links Montemarcello to the seaside village of Lerici is made of trails of medium difficulty set within a stunning natural scenery. From our Hotel it’s possible to reach, on foot, starting your journey in Romito Magra, and through an old road called the “Via Francigena”, the following hamlets: Pugliola, Lerici, La Serra, Rocchetta, Zanego, the botanic garden of Monte Murlo and Montemarcello. From the fantastic hamlet of Montemarcello you may get to, on foot, and through a steep path surrounded by our Mediterranean scrub, the beautiful beach of the “Corvo’s Tip”. From Romito Magra it’s also possible to reach the megalitic site of the famous “Golden Butterfly”, a natural occurrence, taking place during the summer solstice, of sun light refraction over prehistorical stones in the village of “Monti of Saint Lawrence”. Tours of this fascinating phenomenon are organized every year during the summer.
From the “Serena” Hotel you may organize outdoor excursions to “5 Terre” and take the paths along the coast or the “Ligurian High Mountain Route”: both of them link the five villages to one another and offer spectacular panoramas. From Romito Magra you may get to, either by car or bus, the Railway Station of Sarzana, then you can catch a train to the Central Railway Station of La Spezia. From the latter you can catch a regional train towards the 5 Terre: you will reach Riomaggiore in only 5 minutes and the village of Monterosso in about half an hour. At the Tourist Info Point of the Park itself, located in the main railway station of La Spezia, as well as in all the other offices located in each railway station of the five hamlets and by the 5 Terre ticket offices, updated information about the paths along the coast is always available. Moreover, in these very tourist centers you may purchase the “5 Terre Train Card” or the “5 Terre Trekking Card”. The “Cinque Terre Train Card” allows all visitors to get on and off the regional train in order to stop in each village as many times as you wish up until midnight and to use the shuttles that connect all the hamlets. The “Cinque Terre Trekking Card” gives all ticket holders the right to access all paths, to get on the shuttles that connect all the “5 terre” and the right to free WI FI. On this card all the viable hiking trails are clearly marked with all the details about their length and difficulty. The closest paths to the sea are the half way up the hill trail that links Manarola to Corniglia, the one that connects Corniglia to Vernazza and, finally, the path that from Vernazza leads you to Monterosso, the last hamlet. The path n° 1 of the “High Mountain Route” or the path n° 1 of the CAI of La Spezia is also known as the “High 5 Terre Route”. It’s advisable to start your journey from Levanto as this path is much milder and not as steep as if you wre to approach it from Portovenere. This itinerary follows the mountain ridge, facing the sea, and it’s 40 km long. Divided into 6 steps, with an overall height difference of about 1300 m, it’s a challenging trail that calls for special arrangements if you wish to complete it in just one day.
